MCEF NAMES DECEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
- December 2, 2020
PEARL ― The Mississippi Construction Education Foundation is recognizing two career and technical education standouts as its students of the month for December.
Selected from MCEF’s northern and central districts are Ben Lewis of the Holmes County Career and Technical Center and Zachary Scaggs of Amory Career and Technical Center, respectively.
Winners are chosen based on grades, attendance, discipline in class, outstanding achievements, leadership abilities, and post-graduation plans. All will compete for student of the year honors at the foundation’s annual awards program next May.
"We congratulate our student of the month winners for being such excellent representatives of high school career tech programs in Mississippi," said Mike Barkett, MCEF president. "We're proud of each of them for helping ensure our state has a highly skilled workforce to support the state's growing construction and manufacturing industries."
As a first-year student, Lewis is already pursuing leadership roles in his school’s SkillsUSA organization. Setting him apart are his impressive learning skills in basic construction safety, use of hand and power tools, and construction math along with an increasing familiarity with employability and communication skills.
Away from the center, Lewis is a member of the junior varsity basketball team and serves as a drummer in his church choir. His goals include pursuit of higher educational and career opportunities in career and technical education.
Meanwhile, Scaggs is working to improve his craft, often going the extra mile to produce results that surpass expectations as evidenced by his perfect grade point average.
A member of SkillsUSA, he is also active in the Amory High School varsity band and Amory Students of Change. Upon graduation, Scaggs plans to study aerospace engineering at Mississippi State University.
